Leighton Buzzard tip: 9am to 5pm daily, book a slot first

Leighton Buzzard’s tip on Shenley Hill Road is open from 9am to 5pm, seven days a week, including bank holidays. You cannot just turn up: every visit needs a free 20-minute slot booked in advance, and a number-plate barrier at the gate checks it. The one thing it will not take at the moment is a fridge or freezer.

Where it is and when it opens

Christmas and New Year hours

The council has not yet published the 2026 Christmas hours. It says it will “publish details closer to the time”. Last year’s notice came out on 18 December and set these hours at all four tips: (Central Bedfordshire Council, 18 December 2025)

In 2026 Christmas Day falls on a Friday, and the Boxing Day bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December because 26 December is a Saturday. Whether the tip shuts on Saturday 26 December, Monday 28 December or both is one of the things the council’s notice will need to settle. Booking a slot

You must book before every visit, and staff can refuse entry without a booking. The rules, from the council’s booking page: (Central Bedfordshire Council, book a slot)

• slots are 20 minutes long and you can arrive at any point within yours
• booking is free, and you can book up to two weeks ahead or on the day if a slot is free
• you can hold two bookings at a time
• only Central Bedfordshire residents can book; you give your name, email, address and registration
• if you have no internet access, you can book by phone through the council
• you can change or cancel through the link in your confirmation email

The barrier is automatic. All four tips now have number-plate recognition cameras at the gate, and the barrier lifts only for a registration that matches a booking. If you borrow a car, book with its registration. (Central Bedfordshire Council, automated barriers)

Fridges and freezers: nowhere to take them

The council’s booking page says: “We are currently unable to accept fridges or freezers at our Household Waste Recycling Centres until further notice, due to a national shortage of specialist recycling capacity.”

Its paid fridge collection is also stopped. The collection page says the council is “currently unable to collect fridges and freezers” because the specialist recycling firm has no capacity, and that only collections already booked will be honoured. The council’s suggestion is the shop that sells you the new one: many electrical retailers will take the old appliance away on delivery, though some charge. If you pay anyone else to remove it, check they are licensed to dispose of fridges.

What needs a permit

A free waste permit, requested when you book, is needed if you arrive in a van, a pick-up, or a car towing a single-axle trailer (from 1.2m by 0.9m up to 1.8m by 1.2m, no more than 60cm high and covered). Vans and pick-ups towing trailers are not allowed. Each permit covers one visit, up to 12 a year per household. (Central Bedfordshire Council, waste permits)

The tyre charge is quoted two ways on the council’s own site. The waste permits page says £11.70 a tyre; the “what we accept” page and the carpets, mattresses and tyres page both say £11.30. Everything else on the accepted list is free, including garden waste, furniture, electricals other than fridges, paint, wood, scrap metal, glass, cardboard and textiles. Leighton Buzzard is one of three tips that take hard plastics (Ampthill and Biggleswade are the others; Thorn Turn does not). Large lithium batteries from e-bikes and e-scooters are not accepted.

The other three tips

All four Central Bedfordshire tips keep the same hours and the same booking rules, and a booking can be for any of them.

Thorn Turn also has the council’s reuse shop, which sells donated furniture, electricals and household goods. You do not need a booking just to visit the shop, and it is open to people from outside Central Bedfordshire; press the Help button at the barrier and staff will let you in. What is still to be confirmed

• The 2026 Christmas and New Year hours, expected in mid December (last year’s came on 18 December).
• When fridges and freezers are accepted again. The council has given no date.
