Leighton Buzzard to London: 30 minutes, £5,884 a year

Leighton Buzzard sits on the West Coast Main Line, which means two very different trains leave for London from the same platform. One takes 30 minutes to Euston. The other takes 55. They cost exactly the same, and the difference between catching the right one and the wrong one is nearly half an hour of your day, twice.

This page sets out the times, the fares and the season-ticket cost from Leighton Buzzard, and then does the same for Biggleswade, Sandy and Flitwick, because Central Bedfordshire is served by two entirely separate London routes and which one you live on decides where in London you arrive.

The fast train and the slow train

Both are run by London Northwestern Railway, and both go to London Euston.

The fast service is the Birmingham New Street to Euston train, which calls at Leighton Buzzard and then runs almost straight through. On a standard weekday it leaves at about :17 and :47 past the hour and takes 30 to 33 minutes.

The stopping service is the Milton Keynes Central to Euston train, at about :12 and :42 past the hour, taking 55 to 57 minutes.

That is four trains an hour to London through the middle of the day, two of them fast. A worked example from a standard Monday morning, checked on the National Rail timetable:

Look at the 07:42 and the 07:47. Five minutes apart on the platform, 21 minutes apart at Euston. If you take one thing from this page, take that.

First and last trains. On a weekday the first departure for Euston is 04:44, arriving 05:38. Coming home, the last train out of Euston is 01:39, reaching Leighton Buzzard at 02:30, with earlier late services at 23:09, 23:42, 00:09 and 00:39. This is a main line, and it runs most of the night.

The peak-to-off-peak gap is the biggest saving on this page: £11.50 against £20.90 for the same 30-minute journey, a difference of £9.40 each way. On the timetable we checked, the 06:11 departure still carried the off-peak contactless fare and the 06:41 did not.

Season tickets

If you commute more than about three days a week, the season ticket is the number that matters. These are the current standard-class prices to London Terminals:

Adding London Underground pushes it up sharply. A Leighton Buzzard season with zones 1 to 6 Travelcard costs £178.70 a week or £7,148 a year, which is £1,264 more than the plain rail ticket. If your office is a walk from Euston, do not buy the Travelcard.

There is £236 a year between the cheapest and dearest of the three stations, which is close to nothing across a £5,700 to £5,900 bill. Where you live in Central Bedfordshire barely changes what the commute costs. It changes how long it takes, and where in London you come out.

The other line: Biggleswade, Sandy and Flitwick

Central Bedfordshire’s eastern towns are not on the West Coast line at all.

Biggleswade is on the East Coast Main Line, served by Great Northern. The fastest morning trains reach London King’s Cross in 35 to 39 minutes direct. Some services run instead to St Pancras via Thameslink, which takes about 46 minutes plus a walk. The Anytime Day Single is £26.30 and the return £41.90.

Sandy is one stop up the same line but is not as well served: on the morning we checked, the quickest option was 51 minutes with a change at Biggleswade, and the direct Thameslink run to St Pancras took 51 minutes plus the 11-minute walk to King’s Cross. The Anytime Day Single is £27.10.

Flitwick is on the Midland Main Line, served by Thameslink to London St Pancras International. The fastest morning train takes 41 minutes; the typical one takes 51 or 52. The Anytime Day Single is £29.30 and the return £47.70, the dearest walk-up fare of the four stations, though Thameslink also sells Advance singles from £23.60.

The practical point: if you work in the West End or around Euston, the Leighton Buzzard side of the district wins. If you work in the City or around King’s Cross, Biggleswade does. Nobody in Central Bedfordshire has a short journey to both.

At Leighton Buzzard station

The station is on Station Approach, LU7 2LY, in Linslade, about a ten-minute walk downhill from the High Street across the canal.

If you are driving to the station and it is full, the town-centre car parks are about ten minutes’ walk away and cost £8.50 for the day.
