Leighton Buzzard Roadworks This Week: Bypass and M1 J12

Roadworks pages go stale in a fortnight, so this one is built in two halves. The top is what is genuinely closed right now and what is coming next, taken from the council’s own statutory notices and from National Highways, with the dates on it. Below that is the part that does not change: the four roads that decide how long any journey out of Leighton Buzzard takes, what the town car parks cost, and what the bus is doing this month.

What is happening in the next fortnight

1. The Leighton Buzzard Bypass closes between Wing Road and Billington Road from Monday 9 to Tuesday 24 November, for micro asphalt patching. This is a made order: the council’s notice of 27 October confirms it. It is the biggest closure in the town this autumn.
2. East Street is closed outside number 6 until Friday 6 November, for a dig and investigation, under a made order (notice of 20 October).
3. Leighton Road at Hockliffe closes 9 to 11 November, opposite Dairy Court (order made).
4. M1 junction 12 is now on its southbound phase. The southbound exit slip closes on the nights of 6 to 13 November and the southbound entry slip on 5 November, then 16 to 27 November, 9pm to 5am.
5. The town centre shuts for Remembrance Sunday, 8 November, 8am to 1pm. The whole High Street, Market Square, Bridge Street, Church Square, Church Avenue, Pulford Road, Judges Lane, and Lake Street between Duncombe Drive and Hockliffe Street. Bridge Street, Church Square, Church Avenue, Pulford Road and Judges Lane close again on Wednesday 11 November, 9am to 1pm (council notice, 28 October). The council’s site refused our request on 5 November, so this detail is as we read it on 31 October. More on the day itself on our Remembrance Sunday page.

Plantation Road and Lime Grove were both due to finish on 4 November and are off this page. We have found no notice extending either, but we cannot confirm from here that the work finished on time. One new Leighton Buzzard closure has been proposed since the last check: Hockliffe Street, outside number 21a, 1 to 3 December, for Anglian Water. Shenley Hill Road is proposed for 23 to 25 November. Each item is set out below with its source.

The bypass: closed 9 to 24 November, order made

Central Bedfordshire Council gave notice of intent on 13 October and made the order on 27 October to close the Leighton Buzzard Bypass between Wing Road and Billington Road. The order names the road that way. What the notice says:

• Dates: Monday 9 to Tuesday 24 November 2026.
• Hours: work runs 09:00 to 15:30, but the notice says “the road will be closed at all times during this period”.
• Why: micro asphalt patching.
• Diversion: via the A4146, the A5 and the A505, and the same in reverse.
• Exemptions: fire, police and ambulance vehicles on an emergency call.

That diversion is long. In practice, trips between Linslade and the Billington Road side of town will go through the town centre or round by the A5 at Hockliffe. Allow extra time for the school run, and for the run to the A505 towards Dunstable and Luton. Note that the Hockliffe closure on Leighton Road (9 to 11 November) overlaps the first three days.

The order runs for up to 18 months or until the work is finished, so short jobs can still be moved within it. The Highways Helpdesk is 0300 300 8049.

Coming next: the November closures

Every row below is a made order except Shenley Hill Road and Hockliffe Street, which are notices of intent and so could still move. East Street and Leighton Road come from the council’s notice of 20 October; the bypass and Shenley Hill Road from its notice of 27 October; Hockliffe Street from its notice of 3 November.

Shenley Hill Road was last closed from 19 to 21 October; this is a separate job. The Highways Helpdesk on 0300 300 8049 can tell you more about any council job above; for Hockliffe Street the notice gives Anglian Water, 03457 145145.

Meadow Way disabled bay: comments closed 27 October. The council proposed a blue badge bay about 6.6 metres long on the west side, outside numbers 38 and 40, under reference TRO-132 (notice of 6 October). We have seen no notice saying whether it has been made in the bundles to 3 November.

The M1 at junction 12: southbound nights until 23 January

National Highways is replacing the traffic lights at M1 junction 12, Toddington, in both directions from 1 September 2026 to 23 January 2027. Junction 12 is the Toddington junction, reached from the town by the A5 through Hockliffe, so this matters to anyone who joins the M1 at that end rather than at junction 14 in Milton Keynes.

What it involves:

• Overnight closures, 9pm to 5am, Mondays to Fridays, weather permitting.
• A temporary 30mph limit at the junction, plus switching lane closures on Harlington Road (B5120) and the B530.
• The northbound exit slip phase has ended: National Highways lists it as running from 1 September to 4 November.
• Now to 23 January: the work is on the southbound side, with the exit slip and the entry slip closing on different nights. In the next fortnight the southbound exit slip closes on 6 to 13 November, and the southbound entry slip on 5 November and from 16 November. Later dates: exit slip 30 November to 3 December, 10 to 14 December, 8 to 13 January and 22 January; entry slip 16 to 27 November, 4 to 9 December, 15 to 18 December, 5 to 7 January, 14 to 18 January and 21 January.
• Southbound exit slip diversion: carry on to junction 11A, take the third exit at the Chalton roundabout, come back north on the M1 and leave at the junction 12 northbound exit.
• Southbound entry slip diversion: take Harlington Road to the roundabout, go north on the M1 to junction 13, out on the A421, round via Bedford Road and the A507, and back south on the M1.

Two nights to watch later: 19 November and 21 January. On those nights other planned M1 closures mean the usual diversion does not run, and traffic is sent off at junction 13, along the A507 and down the A5120 through Flitwick instead.

Emergency vehicles and residents directly affected by the work will be escorted through. The dates are on National Highways’ scheme page, checked again on 5 November, and can change at short notice.

A separate 50mph limit southbound. National Highways made an order for a 24-hour temporary 50mph limit on the southbound M1 from 19 October. It covers 1,400 metres, starting 1,200 metres north of the junction 12 exit slip, “for public safety reasons”, and stays until repairs are finished (National Highways notice, 15 October). We have found no notice saying it has been lifted, but could not confirm on 5 November whether it is still signed.

Micro asphalt on Leighton Buzzard estate roads: dates passed, none moved

Central Bedfordshire Council’s micro asphalt programme page, read again on 6 November, still gives the same expected starts: Gemini Close on 1 November, “Service Roads, Leighton Buzzard” on 2 November, and Hornbeam Close, Columba Drive and Saturn Close on 3 November. None has been put back, but the page does not say which are finished, so if you live on one of these roads check one.network or call the Highways Helpdesk on 0300 300 8049. The council did not say which service roads it meant, and Avon Walk and Tamar Walk, both in the August notice of intent, are still not on the list.

The council says dates depend on dry weather and “may change at short notice”. Roads are closed while the work is done, with access kept where possible, and residents get letters and warning signs first. Do not park on a neighbouring road where you can avoid it, the council asks. Within four weeks crews come back to lift manhole covers to the new level, sweep loose chippings and repaint the lines.

The original notice of intent, on 18 August, covered Hornbeam Close, Columba Drive, Saturn Close, Avon Walk and Tamar Walk, 08:00 to 18:00, between 14 September and 27 November, with no alternative route (notice, 18 August). We have still not found a made order for those streets in the notices to 3 November.

What else is closed across Central Bedfordshire

Every closure below comes from a Central Bedfordshire Council traffic order published in the statutory notices. Where the council has published a notice of intent rather than a made order, that is flagged: those dates are proposals and can move. Most of these are in Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Toddington, Aspley Guise and the villages rather than Leighton Buzzard. The town’s own are in the table above.

Off the table since the last check, because their dates have passed: Salford Road in Aspley Guise, Potton Road in Everton, Stotfold Road in Arlesey. The new rows come from the council’s notice of 30 October, read on 5 November. Earlier rows come from its notices of 14 October, 15 October, 21 October, 28 October and 29 October, read on 31 October. The older rows (Norcott Close to Marston Road, plus Byslips Road) were last read against their own notices on 15 October; none of the bundles since has changed or confirmed them, so the intended ones are still proposals.

Later in November, beyond the table. The council has proposed closures of West Hyde Road at Hyde (16 to 18 November), Carterweys in Dunstable (16 November to 4 December), Ridgeway and Isle of Wight Lane at Kensworth, Mancroft Road at Caddington, Westdown Gardens in Dunstable, the Barton Bypass either side of Faldo Road (27 November to 1 December), Marston Road at Lidlington by the railway crossing (23 to 25 November) and Shillington Road at Gravenhurst (25 to 27 November). All are notices of intent.

The footpath change near Billington Road: objections closed 13 October. On 4 September the council made an order to divert Footpath No. 16 and part of Footpath No. 44 in Leighton-Linslade, near the Billington Road end. About 60 metres of Footpath 16 is stopped up and a 58-metre, two-metre-wide replacement created, with a matching eight-metre swap on Footpath 44. This changes the definitive map permanently. If no objections were made, the council can confirm the order itself; we have not yet seen a notice saying whether it has.

The Soulbury Road service road in Linslade has new parking rules since 29 September, under an order made on 15 September: no waiting from 10am to noon, seven days a week, along most of it, and no waiting at any time for about 10 metres at each corner with Soulbury Road.

Over the Buckinghamshire border. Buckinghamshire Council has closed about 62 metres of Rowden Farm Lane at Mentmore to through traffic for Openreach work from 2 October, with a diversion via Leighton Road and Ledburn Road (notice of 30 September). Stewkley footpaths 2/1, 2/2 and 3/1 have been closed since 18 September for up to six months because of a failed bridge (notice of 23 September).

The A418 towards Aylesbury: gas main work. SGN, the gas network operator, says on its emergency works page that it has stopped a leak on the A418 Aylesbury Road in Buckinghamshire and is now replacing that section of old iron main with polyethylene pipe. Temporary traffic lights are in place near Mill Cottages, and SGN expects to finish and reopen the road “early next week”. That wording was on the page on 10 October and was still there, unchanged, on 5 November, so we cannot say whether the lights have gone. The update carries no date and does not name the village, so we cannot confirm it is the Wing stretch that closed in August and September. SGN’s earlier entry for the A418 “Aylesbury to Leighton Buzzard” has gone from the page. Check one.network before using the A418 through Wing.

Trains: the next fortnight

Leighton Buzzard is on the West Coast Main Line. None of the engineering work we found booked to mid-November closes the line through the town, but these changes touch Leighton Buzzard journeys.

• Saturday 7 November, from 9.30am. Trains running only between Euston and Tring do not run. National Rail says to use other Euston to Tring services at no extra cost, and that these may be retimed (National Rail).
• Sunday 8 November, until 08:45, north of Milton Keynes. Buses replace trains between Milton Keynes Central and Northampton (National Rail).
• Looking further ahead: Sunday 22 November, before 07:45. Buses replace early morning trains between Euston and Milton Keynes Central and Northampton (National Rail). The notice does not name Leighton Buzzard, but the closed lines run through it.

London Northwestern Railway’s own engineering calendar refused our request on 5 November, so these come from National Rail’s notices only, and there may be others we have not seen. The operator warns that some changes do not show in the journey planner until close to the day, so check your train before you travel. Christmas and New Year trains are on our Christmas trains page.

The four roads that decide your journey

Leighton Buzzard has no motorway and no trunk road through it. Everything depends on which of four A-roads you pick, and they point in genuinely different directions.

• A4146. The town’s own bypass, running around the west and north of Linslade and Leighton Buzzard. Northbound it is the road to Milton Keynes and the M1 at junction 14; southbound it runs to the A505 for Dunstable. This is the fast way out of town in either direction and it is the road most locals mean when they say “the bypass”.
• A505. Starts in Leighton Buzzard and runs east. It is the Leighton Buzzard Bypass proper, from Watling Street (the A5) to the Billington Road and Stanbridge Road roundabout, and it carries on to Dunstable, Luton, Hitchin and eventually Cambridgeshire. If you are heading for Dunstable, Luton or Luton Airport, this is the road.
• A5, Watling Street. Three miles east at Hockliffe. The Roman road, and still the north to south spine of this half of the county. It links the town to Dunstable in one direction and Milton Keynes in the other.
• A418. Begins at a roundabout with the A4146 just north of Ascott and runs south through Wing to Aylesbury, then on to the M40 near Thame. The Buckinghamshire route, and the one most likely to be forgotten.

Central Bedfordshire Council maintains over 1,400 kilometres of road and 220 bridges across the district, which is why patching jobs like the ones in the table above turn up somewhere every week of the year.

A note on the bypass. The stretch between Wing Road and Billington Road is closed from 9 to 24 November for patching (order made, council notice of 27 October). When the council surface-dresses the A505 it usually does it by closing the whole thing at weekends rather than running lane closures: the last resurfacing programme shut it between Watling Street and the Billington Road roundabout for three consecutive weekends, 09:00 to 15:30 each day, with traffic sent round via the A505, A4146 and A5. Expect the same pattern next time.

Parking in Leighton Buzzard

Central Bedfordshire Council runs five car parks in the town. There is no park and ride scheme here: all five are in or beside the town centre. Chargeable hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, and Sundays and bank holidays are free everywhere except the multi-storey.

Three things worth knowing before you drive in:

1. The West Street multi-storey changed how it works on 11 July 2026. It is now pay on arrival, with entry cameras reading your number plate. Use the ground-floor machines or PayByPhone.
2. Free Saturday parking is gone. Duncombe Drive and Ashton Square in Dunstable both lost it as part of the February 2024 budget. The only free windows left are Duncombe Drive from 1pm on Tuesdays and Ashton Square from 1pm on Wednesdays.
3. Park for the park, not in the streets. Parson’s Close Recreation Ground, the town’s Splash ‘n’ Play and skate park site, has no car park of its own, and the town council asks visitors not to use the neighbouring residential streets, many of which run resident parking schemes. Duncombe Drive is the closest car park.

All council car parks take cashless payment through PayByPhone, by app or by calling the number on the sign.

The station car parks are not the council’s. They are run by Saba, which operates three of them at Leighton Buzzard, North and South on Station Approach and a second site on Station Road, plus the one at Cheddington. Tariffs are on the trains to London page.

Buses: two Leighton Buzzard routes changed on 30 August

Arriva changed its Luton, Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard timetables on 30 August 2026, and two of the changes hit this town.

• The X15 is withdrawn. It ran Milton Keynes to Leighton Buzzard to Aylesbury for schools. The council points people to Red Rose route 150, which links Heath and Reach and Leighton Buzzard to Aylesbury, and to the X4, which keeps one school-day journey between Leighton Buzzard and Aylesbury schools.
• The X2 and X3 have revised timetables. There is an extra early morning journey from Leighton Buzzard to Milton Keynes, and one early morning journey towards Luton now runs via Stanbridge and Tilsworth, which is normally X4 territory, to give an earlier bus towards Luton.

What a bus costs here, as things stand:

• £3 is the national cap on a single fare on most routes. The government committed in July 2026 to bring it down to £2 on 1 January 2027.
• £1 is the maximum single fare for anyone aged over 5 and under 19 who lives in Central Bedfordshire and holds a YP Card. The card is free, valid 24 hours a day all year, and the journey has to start or finish in the district. The council says its funding runs to March 2029 and that it intends to hold the fare at £1.
• £12.50 for a day or £38 for a week buys a mojo ticket: unlimited direct journeys on buses in Central Bedfordshire and to Bedford, Luton, Aylesbury, Milton Keynes, Hitchin, St Albans, Stevenage and Letchworth. It works on Arriva, Centrebus, Red Rose, Grant Palmer, Stagecoach, Uno, A2B, Red Eagle and South Bedfordshire Dial-a-Ride.
• Free at any time for residents holding an older person’s or disabled person’s concessionary pass.

The August offer that let 5 to 15-year-olds travel free across England ran from 1 to 31 August 2026 and has ended.

Four operators serve the town, and they do different jobs:

• Arriva Beds and Bucks runs the long-distance routes through the High Street and Bridge Street: the X2 and X3 between Milton Keynes and Luton Airport, and the X4 between Luton Airport and Aylesbury.
• Centrebus (South) runs the town network, L1, L2, L4 and L5, linking Linslade, Brooklands, Vandyke Road, the leisure centre and Grovebury Retail Park.
• Red Rose Travel runs the Buckinghamshire village routes, 150, 162, 163, 165 and 167, out to Wing, Stewkley, Edlesborough, Ivinghoe and Aylesbury.
• South Beds Dial-a-Ride runs the 47, Dunstable to Toddington, Ridgmont, Woburn and Leighton Buzzard.

The High Street and West Street stops are the ones everything calls at. When a town-centre closure is on, check the operator before you stand at a stop: the local L routes get diverted first.

Is the Leighton Buzzard bypass closed?

The stretch between Wing Road and Billington Road is closed from Monday 9 to Tuesday 24 November, at all times. Separately, the A505 Leighton Buzzard Bypass, between Watling Street and the Billington Road and Stanbridge Road roundabout, is closed whole at weekends when it is being surface dressed, typically 09:00 to 15:30 with traffic diverted via the A505, A4146 and A5. How much is parking in Leighton Buzzard town centre?

£1 for an hour and £8.50 for the day at the West Street multi-storey, Hockliffe Street and Duncombe Drive. Baker Street and New Road are free but limited to two hours. Sundays and bank holidays are free except in the multi-storey, where a Sunday costs £2.20 all day.

Is there free parking in Leighton Buzzard?

Yes, in three ways: Baker Street and New Road are free for up to two hours; every council car park except the multi-storey is free on Sundays and bank holidays; and Duncombe Drive is free from 1pm to 6pm on Tuesdays. Free Saturday parking was withdrawn in the February 2024 budget.

Which motorway is nearest to Leighton Buzzard?

The M1. The usual route is the A4146 north to junction 14 at Milton Keynes. Heading south, the A505 and A5 reach the M1 at the Dunstable end, at junction 11a or junction 12, where the slip road work is running.
