Leighton Buzzard roadworks: Plantation Road shut 23-25 Sep

Roadworks pages go stale in a fortnight, so this one is built in two halves. The top is what is genuinely closed right now and what is coming next, taken from the council’s own statutory notices and from National Highways, with the dates on it. Below that is the part that does not change: the four roads that decide how long any journey out of Leighton Buzzard takes, what the town car parks cost, and what the bus is doing this month.

The four things happening in the next fortnight

1. Plantation Road is closed outside Woodcote from Wednesday 23 to Friday 25 September, at all times, for a fire hydrant repair. Cooper Drive is shut outside number 40 on Tuesday 22 September, 09:00 to 15:00. Both orders have been made.
2. Ship Road in Linslade closes from Monday 28 to Wednesday 30 September, 08:00 to 16:00, outside number 19, for an Anglian Water stop tap replacement. Stanbridge Road at Great Billington shuts on the same three days, 09:00 to 15:30, outside BS Trailers, for ditch clearance. Both orders have been made.
3. The M1 northbound exit slip at junction 12 stays closed every weeknight, 9pm to 5am, until 4 November. On Friday 25 September the usual diversion does not run and traffic is sent through Flitwick instead.
4. Vandyke Road is due to close outside Vandyke School from 12 to 14 October. That order has only been proposed, not made, so the dates can still move.

Each is set out below with its source. The five Leighton Buzzard streets that were supposed to be resurfaced from 14 September still have no confirmed order, five weeks after the council said it intended to make one.

Plantation Road and Cooper Drive, and then Ship Road

Four town closures are on the council’s statutory notices for the next fortnight, and all four orders have been made rather than merely proposed.

• Cooper Drive, Leighton Buzzard, outside number 40. Closed Tuesday 22 September, 09:00 to 15:00, for a manhole cover replacement. No alternative route is published.
• Plantation Road, Leighton Buzzard, outside Woodcote. Closed at all times from Wednesday 23 to Friday 25 September, for a fire hydrant repair. Signed diversion: Heath Road, Leighton Road, Plantation Road.
• Ship Road, Linslade, outside number 19. Closed 28 to 30 September, 08:00 to 16:00, for a stop tap replacement. Signed diversion: Waterloo Road, Victoria Road, Ship Road. Anglian Water is the contact on 0800 145 145.
• Stanbridge Road, Great Billington, outside BS Trailers. Closed 28 to 30 September, 09:00 to 15:30, for ditch clearance. Signed diversion: A505, B440, Stanbridge Road.

The council’s wording is the same on all four: access to property and premises is maintained where possible, but can be restricted according to the signs on the day. Emergency vehicles are exempt.

Vandyke Road, outside the school, from 12 October

The one to diarise is Vandyke Road, closed outside Vandyke School from Monday 12 to Wednesday 14 October, 09:00 to 15:30, for carriageway patching. The published diversion runs via Kemsley Drive, Heath Road, Church Street, Leston Road, the A4012, Beaudesert and Vandyke Road.

This one is not yet a decision. The council has given notice that it intends to make the order in not less than seven days from the notice, which was dated 15 September. Until a made order appears, treat 12 October as a plan rather than a fact, and expect the school run to be the pressure point: the closure runs through both ends of the school day.

The M1 at junction 12, closed weeknights now

National Highways is replacing the traffic lights at M1 junction 12, Toddington, in both directions from 1 September 2026 to 23 January 2027. Junction 12 is the Toddington junction, reached from the town by the A5 through Hockliffe, so this matters to anyone who joins the M1 at that end rather than at junction 14 in Milton Keynes.

The first phase is live. What it involves:

• Overnight closures, 9pm to 5am, Mondays to Fridays, weather permitting.
• A temporary 30mph limit at the junction, plus switching lane closures on Harlington Road (B5120) and the B530.
• 1 September to 4 November: the M1 northbound exit slip at junction 12 is fully closed on weeknights. The signed diversion runs on to junction 13, out on the A421 towards Bedford, round via Bedford Road and the A507, and back south on the M1.
• 4 November to 23 January: the work moves to the southbound side, with the exit slip and the entry slip closing on different nights. The exit slip goes on 4 November, 6 to 13 November, 30 November to 3 December, 10 to 14 December, 8 to 13 January and 22 January. The entry slip goes on 5 November, 16 to 27 November, 4 to 9 December, 15 to 18 December, 5 to 7 January, 14 to 18 January and 21 January.

One night to watch: Friday 25 September. Other planned M1 closures mean the usual diversion does not run that night. Traffic is sent along the A5120 Harlington Road towards Westoning, through Flitwick on Flitwick Road, north on Ampthill Road (A5120), onto the A507 and back on to the M1 at junction 13. The same applies on 19 November and 21 January, in the opposite direction.

Emergency vehicles and residents directly affected by the work will be escorted through. The dates are on National Highways’ scheme page and can change at short notice.

The five Leighton Buzzard streets: still no confirmed order

On 18 August the council gave notice that it intended to close five residential streets in Leighton Buzzard at all times, 08:00 to 18:00, from 14 September to 27 November 2026, for pre-patching, micro surfacing and white lining:

• Hornbeam Close
• Columba Drive
• Saturn Close
• Avon Walk
• Tamar Walk

That intended start date has now passed. As of 20 September the council has published no notice confirming that the Leighton Buzzard order was made, five weeks after the notice of intent and six days after the work was supposed to start. Every batch of notices published since, on 9, 10, 11 and 16 September, has confirmed orders elsewhere in the district and said nothing about these five streets. The three equivalent orders elsewhere in the district were confirmed: Park Hill in Toddington, Wallace Drive and The Nurseries in Eaton Bray and five streets in Houghton Regis (St Michaels Avenue, Watling Place, Roman Gardens, Drury Lane and Eddiwick Avenue) all appear as made orders in the council’s notice of 2 September, over the same 14 September to 27 November dates. Mill Lane in Langford was added as a made order on 4 September.

So the same programme is live on four sets of streets in the district and unconfirmed on ours. We have not been able to establish today whether work has begun on the five Leighton Buzzard roads. If it has, the notice of intent set out what to expect: no alternative route for any of the closures, access to properties maintained where possible but restricted according to signing on the day, and a 14 September to 27 November window that is the programme rather than the length of work on any one street. We will update this page when a confirming notice appears.

What else is closed, from 20 September

Every closure below comes from a Central Bedfordshire Council traffic order published in the statutory notices. Where the council has published a notice of intent rather than a made order, that is flagged: those dates are proposals and can move. Most of the district’s roadworks this fortnight are in Dunstable, Sandy and Biggleswade rather than Leighton Buzzard, but the town has two of its own in the week of 21 September and two more in the week of 28 September.

The September jobs that have come off the table since the last check: Broad Green at Cranfield, which was closed on 17 and 18 September, and before that Albion Street and Waterlow Road in Dunstable, Great Lane in Clophill, Wilstead Hill at Haynes, Franklin Road and St Peters Road in Dunstable, Brook End in Potton and the Everton level crossing night. Dunstable Road at Studham was due to reopen on 16 September.

Five closures that were only proposals a fortnight ago now have made orders and are going ahead: Norcott Close and Boscombe Road in Dunstable, Brian Road at Harlington, Newlands Road at Hyde, Sundon Road in Houghton Regis and both ends of Sharpenhoe Road.

One permanent change worth knowing about. On 4 September the council made an order to divert Footpath No. 16 and part of Footpath No. 44 in Leighton-Linslade, near the Billington Road end. About 60 metres of Footpath 16 is stopped up and a 58-metre, two-metre-wide replacement created, with a matching eight-metre swap on Footpath 44. This is not a temporary closure: it changes the definitive map. Objections or representations have to reach the council in writing by 13 October 2026, at definitivemap@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk or the Highway Assets Intelligence Team Leader at Priory House, Chicksands, Shefford SG17 5QT, stating the grounds. If none are made, the council can confirm the order itself.

Trains: the rest of September

Leighton Buzzard is on the West Coast Main Line, and September’s engineering work is concentrated on Sundays and late evenings. The Sunday 20 September closure, when Network Rail lifted Oxhey Grange footbridge out and no train reached Euston before 16:00, has now happened. These are the dates still to come.

• Monday 21 to Thursday 24 September. The 22:50 Birmingham New Street to Northampton is amended. It does not call here, but it is the last connection of the night for anyone coming back through Northampton.
• Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September. Amended late night and early morning London Northwestern services to and from Bushey, on the Euston to Northampton route.
• Sunday 27 September, early morning. Buses replace the early London Northwestern trains between Euston and Milton Keynes Central and Northampton. The 06:39, 07:10 and 07:38 from Milton Keynes Central to Euston do not run, and nor does the 06:55 Euston to Northampton. The 07:24 Euston to Birmingham New Street leaves at 07:30 instead and runs slightly later as far as Milton Keynes.
• Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 September. Amended late night and early morning London Northwestern services to and from Bushey, on the Euston to Milton Keynes route.
• Monday 28 September, after 22:30. Euston to Northampton trains terminate at Milton Keynes Central, with buses on to Northampton. Journeys to Leighton Buzzard are unaffected; journeys beyond Milton Keynes are not.

Two more sit just north of us and are worth knowing about if you are changing at Milton Keynes: Avanti services between Euston or Northampton and Rugby and Coventry are amended until 11:50 on Sunday 27 September, and Avanti’s late evening trains are diverted via Northampton between Milton Keynes and Rugby from Tuesday 29 September to Thursday 1 October.

London Northwestern’s calendar showed nothing for October when we checked on 20 September, and its month view will not load ahead, so October’s alterations are not yet confirmable from the operator. Check your specific train before you travel: the operator warns that some of these changes are not showing in the National Rail journey planner until closer to the day.

The four roads that decide your journey

Leighton Buzzard has no motorway and no trunk road through it. Everything depends on which of four A-roads you pick, and they point in genuinely different directions.

• A4146. The town’s own bypass, running around the west and north of Linslade and Leighton Buzzard. Northbound it is the road to Milton Keynes and the M1 at junction 14; southbound it runs to the A505 for Dunstable. This is the fast way out of town in either direction and it is the road most locals mean when they say “the bypass”.
• A505. Starts in Leighton Buzzard and runs east. It is the Leighton Buzzard Bypass proper, from Watling Street (the A5) to the Billington Road and Stanbridge Road roundabout, and it carries on to Dunstable, Luton, Hitchin and eventually Cambridgeshire. If you are heading for Dunstable, Luton or Luton Airport, this is the road.
• A5, Watling Street. Three miles east at Hockliffe. The Roman road, and still the north to south spine of this half of the county. It links the town to Dunstable in one direction and Milton Keynes in the other.
• A418. Begins at a roundabout with the A4146 just north of Ascott and runs south through Wing to Aylesbury, then on to the M40 near Thame. The Buckinghamshire route, and the one most likely to be forgotten.

Central Bedfordshire Council maintains over 1,400 kilometres of road and 220 bridges across the district, which is why patching jobs like the ones in the table above turn up somewhere every week of the year.

A note on the bypass. When the council surface-dresses the A505 it does it by closing the whole thing at weekends rather than running lane closures: the last resurfacing programme shut it between Watling Street and the Billington Road roundabout for three consecutive weekends, 09:00 to 15:30 each day, with traffic sent round via the A505, A4146 and A5. Expect the same pattern next time.

Parking in Leighton Buzzard

Central Bedfordshire Council runs five car parks in the town. There is no park and ride scheme here: all five are in or beside the town centre. Chargeable hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday, and Sundays and bank holidays are free everywhere except the multi-storey.

Three things worth knowing before you drive in:

1. The West Street multi-storey changed how it works on 11 July 2026. It is now pay on arrival, with entry cameras reading your number plate. Use the ground-floor machines or PayByPhone.
2. Free Saturday parking is gone. Duncombe Drive and Ashton Square in Dunstable both lost it as part of the February 2024 budget. The only free windows left are Duncombe Drive from 1pm on Tuesdays and Ashton Square from 1pm on Wednesdays.
3. Park for the park, not in the streets. Parson’s Close Recreation Ground, the town’s Splash ‘n’ Play and skate park site, has no car park of its own, and the town council asks visitors not to use the neighbouring residential streets, many of which run resident parking schemes. Duncombe Drive is the closest car park.

All council car parks take cashless payment through PayByPhone, by app or by calling the number on the sign.

The station car parks are not the council’s. They are run by Saba, which operates three of them at Leighton Buzzard, North and South on Station Approach and a second site on Station Road, plus the one at Cheddington. Tariffs are on the trains to London page.

Buses: two Leighton Buzzard routes changed on 30 August

Arriva changed its Luton, Dunstable and Leighton Buzzard timetables on 30 August 2026, and two of the changes hit this town.

• The X15 is withdrawn. It ran Milton Keynes to Leighton Buzzard to Aylesbury for schools. The council points people to Red Rose route 150, which links Heath and Reach and Leighton Buzzard to Aylesbury, and to the X4, which keeps one school-day journey between Leighton Buzzard and Aylesbury schools.
• The X2 and X3 have revised timetables. There is an extra early morning journey from Leighton Buzzard to Milton Keynes, and one early morning journey towards Luton now runs via Stanbridge and Tilsworth, which is normally X4 territory, to give an earlier bus towards Luton.

What a bus costs here, as things stand:

• £3 is the national cap on a single fare on most routes. The government committed in July 2026 to bring it down to £2 on 1 January 2027.
• £1 is the maximum single fare for anyone aged over 5 and under 19 who lives in Central Bedfordshire and holds a YP Card. The card is free, valid 24 hours a day all year, and the journey has to start or finish in the district. The council says its funding runs to March 2029 and that it intends to hold the fare at £1.
• £12.50 for a day or £38 for a week buys a mojo ticket: unlimited direct journeys on buses in Central Bedfordshire and to Bedford, Luton, Aylesbury, Milton Keynes, Hitchin, St Albans, Stevenage and Letchworth. It works on Arriva, Centrebus, Red Rose, Grant Palmer, Stagecoach, Uno, A2B, Red Eagle and South Bedfordshire Dial-a-Ride.
• Free at any time for residents holding an older person’s or disabled person’s concessionary pass.

The August offer that let 5 to 15-year-olds travel free across England ran from 1 to 31 August 2026 and has ended.

Four operators serve the town, and they do different jobs:

• Arriva Beds and Bucks runs the long-distance routes through the High Street and Bridge Street: the X2 and X3 between Milton Keynes and Luton Airport, and the X4 between Luton Airport and Aylesbury.
• Centrebus (South) runs the town network, L1, L2, L4 and L5, linking Linslade, Brooklands, Vandyke Road, the leisure centre and Grovebury Retail Park.
• Red Rose Travel runs the Buckinghamshire village routes, 150, 162, 163, 165 and 167, out to Wing, Stewkley, Edlesborough, Ivinghoe and Aylesbury.
• South Beds Dial-a-Ride runs the 47, Dunstable to Toddington, Ridgmont, Woburn and Leighton Buzzard.

The High Street and West Street stops are the ones everything calls at. When a town-centre closure is on, check the operator before you stand at a stop: the local L routes get diverted first.

How much is parking in Leighton Buzzard town centre?

£1 for an hour and £8.50 for the day at the West Street multi-storey, Hockliffe Street and Duncombe Drive. Baker Street and New Road are free but limited to two hours. Sundays and bank holidays are free except in the multi-storey, where a Sunday costs £2.20 all day.
