Leighton Buzzard Christmas bins: dates came 18 Dec last year

Central Bedfordshire Council has not yet published its Christmas 2026 bin dates for Leighton Buzzard. Last year it announced them on 18 December, a week before Christmas, and moved ten collection days. This page sets out exactly what changed last year, how the tip’s hours changed, and what is different about the 2026 calendar, and it will be updated the day the council publishes.

The quick answer

• The 2026 revised dates are not published yet. Last year’s notice came on 18 December 2025.
• Last Christmas, Monday 22 December bins were collected on Saturday 20 December, and normal collections came back on Monday 5 January.
• The tip on Shenley Hill Road was closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day and open 9am to 1pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

What changed last Christmas

The council’s notice listed every revised day. Bins still had to be out by 7am on the new day. (Central Bedfordshire Council, Christmas 2025 and New Year bin collection changes, 18 December 2025)

The pattern is worth reading closely. The week before Christmas was pulled forward, so everything was done before Christmas Day, while the Boxing Day and New Year rounds were pushed back a day. General waste, recycling and food waste all followed the same revised dates.

Why 2026 will look different

The days fall differently this year. The council’s own bank holidays page lists Friday 25 December 2026 as Christmas Day and Monday 28 December 2026 as the Boxing Day substitute bank holiday, because 26 December is a Saturday. New Year’s Day 2027 is also a Friday. (Central Bedfordshire Council, bank holidays)

So the rounds most likely to move are the two Fridays and possibly Monday 28 December. The council has not said how it will treat that Monday, and last year’s pattern cannot simply be shifted by a day. Wait for the notice rather than working the dates out from last year.

The tip over Christmas

Last year the council’s household waste recycling centres, including Leighton Buzzard’s on Shenley Hill Road, were open 9am to 5pm every day except:

• Christmas Day
• Boxing Day
• New Year’s Day

On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve they opened from 9am to 1pm only. (Central Bedfordshire Council, 18 December 2025)

Real Christmas trees

Last year real trees were collected from Monday 5 January to Friday 16 January 2026, on your normal recycling day. The rules were:

• put the tree next to your recycling bin, not in a bag or a bin
• take off every decoration and light; artificial trees are not collected
• keep it under 6 feet (183cm) tall, with a trunk no wider than 3 inches (8cm)

No other garden waste was collected in those two weeks.

Garden waste stops for the winter

The £58.23 garden waste subscription for 2026/27 includes “a 12-week winter pause between December and February”, in the council’s words. The council has not yet published the exact first and last dates of the pause for this winter. (Central Bedfordshire Council, garden waste subscription)
