Police want dash-cam footage after three single-vehicle deaths at Woburn, near Upper Caldecote and on the A1, between 4 and 13 September.

Bedfordshire Police has issued three separate witness appeals in ten days after three people died in three single-vehicle collisions on Central Bedfordshire roads. All three appeals are still open, and in every one the force is asking specifically for dash-cam footage.

The most recent was at Sheep Lane, Woburn, about five miles north-east of Leighton Buzzard. (Bedfordshire Police, Appeal following fatal collision in Woburn)

Woburn, Sunday 13 September

The force says a white Fiat 500 left the carriageway in Sheep Lane and hit a tree at around 11pm. The only occupant, a woman in her late teens, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detective Constable Lotty Lewis, of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Roads Policing Unit, said in the statement:

This was a tragic incident in which a young woman sadly died. I would like to pay tribute to the emergency services who attended the incident and carried out extensive lifesaving efforts.

She added that there are no known witnesses to the collision itself, but that passing vehicles afterwards may have recorded something useful.

There might have been passing vehicles post-collision whose dash cameras captured something, even if the driver and occupants did not notice the vehicle off the road. Any information may help us to establish what caused this incident to occur.

The other two, both within the last fortnight

Friday 4 September, near Upper Caldecote. Emergency services were called at around 8.30pm to reports that a vehicle had left the B658 between Hill Lane and Southill Road. One person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sergeant Mark Atkins, of the same roads policing unit, said officers particularly want to hear from anyone who saw a blue Vauxhall Astra being driven along the B658 shortly before the collision. Sunday 6 September, junction 10 of the A1. Police were called at about 3.20am to a single-vehicle collision. The force says it is believed a black BMW had been travelling northbound when it left the road. One man was pronounced dead at the scene and three other people were taken to hospital. A woman in her 20s was arrested in connection with the incident and has been bailed.

Detective Constable Lewis Stanley, of the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Serious Collision Investigation Unit, asked for anyone who witnessed the collision, or who has dash-cam footage of a black BMW on the A1 beforehand, to come forward. An arrest is not a charge and not a conviction. Nobody has been named by the force in any of the three cases.

What the three have in common

Read together, the statements share a pattern worth noting:

  • All three were single-vehicle collisions, with no second vehicle mentioned.
  • Two of the three happened in darkness, at 8.30pm and 11pm, and the third at 3.20am.
  • In every one the force is asking for dash-cam footage of the vehicle before the collision, rather than for eyewitnesses to the crash itself.
  • Two are being handled by the tri-force Roads Policing Unit and one by the Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

The force has not linked the three incidents, and there is nothing in any of the statements to suggest a connection between them. They are three separate investigations.

What it means for you

If you drove any of these three roads at those times, your dash cam may hold the only record of what happened. That is the whole reason all three appeals lead on footage.

  • Check the dates and times against your own journeys. Sheep Lane, Woburn at about 11pm on Sunday 13 September. The B658 between Hill Lane and Southill Road at about 8.30pm on Friday 4 September. The A1 near junction 10 at about 3.20am on Sunday 6 September.
  • Footage is usually overwritten within days. Most dash cams loop. If you think you have something, save the file off the card before you check anything else.

  • Do not call 999 unless it is an emergency happening now.
